Jobs, travelling and self confidence. [Jan 06 2010 / 1:39am]

[forallmylove]
Here's the deal. I'm studying French and German at uni but think my French is muuuuch worse than my German. I really need to go over to the country, spend some time there and pick it up that way. So I thought I could do it this summer. HOWEVER the whole process fills me with dread- being all on my own with no contacts out there (basically being grown up and independent, wah).

What I would like to know is if any of you have had experiences working abroad for the summer, what did you work as, where did you stay? Or maybe you can recommend some summer schools? I was thinking of working at a hostel/hotel and staying there (killing two birds with one stone) as it would be easier than working in a restuarant/bar and trying to find a place to stay, non???

Having said all this, I feel I lack the confidence to even work in a bar/restaurant, thinking that I'd be clumsy and drop everything or that drunk customers need only to make one remark and I'd burst into tears. I'm not very strong and take everything to heart. Any advice on overcoming this too as it's putting me off applying for weekend jobs here! :(

Are lush not doing the £10 and £15 grab bags this year? They usually do them in January with mostly Christmas products in - on the website it says you have to spend £20 or £50 to get a £10 or £20 bag free. I'll be very sad if they have stopped doing it!!

Students, how much do you spend on food a week and what does your usual shopping list consist of? What kind of stuff do you cook/eat?

I want to start eating healthier and making more sensible shopping lists while not spending loads. At the beginning I probably spent too much on food and by the end I was eating pasta (£1, aldi) and cheese everyday.
I also have a problem of buying things that just go off in the fridge.

What are some good, cheap, healthy recipes for 1 or 2 people? I can't really make loads of things in bulk as there is hardly any space in the freezer.

I can cook, I just need some inspiration of what to do on a budget!

Pumpkin Cheesecake Bread Pudding [Jan 05 2010 / 7:45pm]

Why, yes, I did say Pumpkin Cheesecake Bread Pudding. Rethinking some resolutions?

If it's cold where you live, you neeeeed to make this delicious, simple bread pudding. It's a humble, gorgeous, comforting, easy dessert you'll love. My boyfriend is already asking when I'm going to make it again -- good sign!

This pudding isn't the only thing that's amazing; the cookbook it comes from is phenomenal as well. Heirloom Baking with the Brass Sisters is a collection of heirloom recipes from the Brass family, as well as from yard sales, used bookstores, antique cookbooks, and various family collections.

Normally I post the full recipe in my post here, but in order to only reprint the Brass Sisters' recipe once (with permission), I've only recorded it on my personal baking blog, linked below. You can also read a full review of their cookbook there.

Lady Gaga, the 'grotesque' and privilege [Jan 05 2010 / 10:24pm]

[thisglasnost]

Hope this isn't TL;DR! I came across a really interesting post on Tumblr today and thought i would share/put its subject matter up for discussion. The post talks about a recent interview with Lady Gaga in the LA Times. Here's a couple of extracts from the story:

Her new songs address serious themes like women's shame about their bodies and the need for open communication in relationships; her often physically distorting costumes show that the pursuit of the feminine ideal is far from natural. Her commitment to confront the changing notion of what's "natural" puts Gaga on the same road traveled by artists she admires, such as the photographer Cindy Sherman. Her frank talk about how female artists aren't expected to write their own songs or about how young women are afraid to ask for what they need from their sexual partners inches her toward a new articulation of feminism.

..."The great thing about Gaga is she always want to push for the most extreme option," Card said. "She's brave enough to let herself be a canvas for a designer to go and really express themselves. Nothing is off limits! With Rihanna and Beyoncé there is an end result of desirability and unattainable sexiness, whereas Gaga is a really interesting bridge between the desirable and the grotesque. She's not at all worried about looking ridiculous or hideous; actually, I think she thrives off it."

And here's a couple of extracts from the brilliant post on Tumblr:

i feel like there are limits, maybe, to how “hideous” an extremely skinny blonde white girl can be considered...to put it another way: picture a fat woman, or a black woman, or a Latina woman, or a fat black Latina woman, doing ANYTHING that lady gaga has ever done, and tell me people would still be talking about her as some kind of subversive artiste...tell me 95% of the commentary about her outside maybe the feminist blogosphere wouldn’t be ridicule or disgust.

...or to put it another way: white skinny bodies are allowed to be art. you see this all the fucking time in the twee/hipster zones of the world/internet, soft-focus photos in sepia tones with size 2 AT MOST people standing in for melancholy, or wistfulness, or love, or whatever. you don’t see fat girls lying in a field of daisies wearing fishnets and reading haruki murakami next to a picnic spread under a parasol. because then the viewer, it’s assumed, would get distracted by their fatness. skinny bodies (& white bodies) are allowed to turn themselves into things because they are presumed to be blank slates. they’re neutral. fatness already symbolizes things in our culture - laziness, sloth, greed - so it’s not allowed to symbolize other things.

or another way: lady gaga is allowed to play at being grotesque because it’s understood that she is making a choice to be grotesque; fat, non-white, or otherwise atypical bodies already belong to the realm of the grotesque. the choice is made for them. whether it’s as unfuckable (fat women, women with visible disabilities) or inherently sexualized (black and Latina women) or some weird combination of fuckable but not sexual (asian women) or just grotesque and unworthy (trans women).

I think the critique on Tumblr brings up some really interesting and valid points with particular reference to the way we see things on the internet in terms of body types/ethnicities represented in the art and photography we post on our journals, or write about in our blogs, or favourite on Tumblr.

So discuss if you wish: Lady Gaga and her image, representations of 'controversial' women in pop culture, white/thin bodies v everyone else.

Vinegar

Looking for some creative uses for this, or other, types of vinegars.

I feel like the discovery of acids in seasoning food has been a revelation. It's like hot sauce or ketchup - I use that isht on everything. = )

Okay i know it's so boring and there has recently been something similar but really i need to know...

What's so bloody brilliant about a blackberry?!

I've never had a contract phone and top up my pay as you go about £50 a month so have finally decided to get a contract. I've been looking at deals and the new curve isnt so expensive...
I have never been interested in a blackberry and hate how it's a total craze right now to have either an iphone or a blackberry. i just want to know why?! the last thing i need is to be on facebook more than i already am so what else is it good for apart from the internet? I really cant see what all the fuss is about!!

Do you think now is a bad time to sell on there, as alot of people are listing unwanted gifts, or should I just join them?
Also, any tips on how to get views on ebay items?

TIA x

Ahhh, my new beauties from the TopShop Sale!
educed from £150 to £45 I believe...
They had no size 7s, but I took a risk and ordered the size 6 instead and they fitted perfectly.
I like to think of them as Dominatrix Mountaineering Boots :)

Are we ready to bring back bumbags?

I mean I guess they have their uses but seriously? I just still have the image of me wearing a bright pink one to death when I was 8 burned in my memory and I just don't think I can do it again!

I always wonder if people would still wear them if Prada hadn't made a version, which Topshop can then copy - probably not...although I guess that can be said for a lot of fashion trends e.g. the cage skirt - don't get me started on that!
