BOWERBIRDS

It appears I'm late to board the Bowerbirds flight, but nevertheless I'm boarding it anyway.

The band hail from Raleigh, North Carolina, and are composed of a rotating cast of musicians who perform alongside staples Phil Moore and Beth Tacular. Frequently branded with the Americana genre, the duo make traveling folk with a tint of soothing acoustic country; think of a less frantic Eef Barzelay pared with SixToes. They're extensively touring the US after Christmas and, judging by mounting hype, should be visiting European shores soon!

HAVE A VERY CHERRY MAXMUS

With less than a week to go I think it's about time I get a Christmas mixtape together. No doubt you'll hear from me before then, but in case I forget, I hope you all have a great festive couple of days, eat enough to make you feel a sick but are not actually sick, and get some great presents!

Tristram [Dec 17 2009 / 8:22pm]

TRISTRAM

About a year ago the music scene seemed in danger of becoming over saturated by male singer-songwriters with a penchant for croaking like the upper-class British cousin of Bob Dylan. Thankfully, that craze quickly wore its path into oblivion, and these days we've been left with the creme de la creme. It is, however, a shame that male singer-songwriters have consequently become cautious of the cliche of singing alone, and thus there's a very open niche in the market that doesn't necessarily involve bitterness, religious references and/or whiskey drenched vocals. It's a niche that, dare I say it, may have been consumed by this man:

Tristram hales from London and ticks every bracket with a magical, folk laden twinkle. His music is understated but beautiful; well composed tales of tragedy and loss that gently settle on and surround your soul.

Jay Jay Pistolet recap [Dec 14 2009 / 8:39pm]

JAY JAY PISTOLET RECAP

Someone asked me to reupload this in light of Jay Jay Pistolet's recent demise, so here it is! A zip of unreleased songs and b-sides.

Hailing from the New Forest, Justin James Hayward-Young relocated to London to attend art school. Don't expect to hear any Franz Ferdinand influence here though, it's more Eugene McGuinness casio-tones crossed with Bob Dylan grumblings.

The Rosie Taylor Project [Dec 14 2009 / 11:12am]

THE ROSIE TAYLOR PROJECT RECAP

Leeds six piece The Rosie Taylor Project keep popping on and off the DrunkenWerewolf screen, but with their debut full length due for release on Bad Sneakers in spring 2010, it seems they're set to make a permanent appearance soon.

They've previously been compared to Iron & Wine and Frightened Rabbit by mainstream press, and I've pegged them alongside King Creosote and Zooey Van Gooey in the past - if you like any of those musicians, I sincerely suggest you check out the demo version of "Gloria", a track featured on their forthcoming album, which you can download below!

Get a copy of #10! [Dec 11 2009 / 10:41am]

drunkenwerewolf
BUY ISSUE #10 THROUGH THE P&P SCHEME

DrunkenWerewolf readers, get a b&w copy of Issue #10 posted to your door for £2.00 to any British address or £3.00 internationally. Please be aware that it's the Christmas period and DrunkenWerewolves are not immune to postal chaos, therefore delivery may be affected. Scroll down for the 'Buy Now' buttons. Let me know here if there's any problems.

The issue celebrates five years of DrunkenWerewolf in some form of media - a good time to catch up with some of our favourite artists, we have articles written by Jeremy Warmsley, Lupen Crook and Laura Simmons of Das Wanderlust, and two established writers talk about how they found Kat Flint and Caitlin Rose. We've interviewed Bristol collective OLO Worms, London's music monarch King Charles and recording studio mavericks House of Strange, and there's also an interview with Nashville's fantastic gypsy/country outfit Buffalo Clover and a bumper feature on the Filthy Little Angels record label. Finally, to celebrate a decade of music, the writers have picked out their most inspiring albums of the 2000's.

We do like money, but we like music a lot more, so if you can get to a place where the magazine is stocked you can have a copy for free. A batch will be available from FOPP's Bristol store and Edinburgh's Avalanche Records within the week. Keep your eyes and ears open for more stockists soon!

Save the Half Moon [Dec 10 2009 / 10:09am]

drunkenwerewolf
It's come to my attention that The Half Moon in Putney, London, is being threatened with closure to make way for yet another four walled gastro. You can read more here.

Pubs and venues like The Half Moon are constantly being threatened with deconstruction and I appreciate that past failures suggest our efforts are futile, but I still erge you to try to prevent this from happening. At the end of the day, it's better to fight and be heard than to stand aside and watch something dear to the music scene literally fall to the ground. This conformity damages the independent economy and clears the way for monopoly chains like Barfly and O2, who do little to support and showcase local talent and demand extortionate and unrealistic prices from freelance promoters.

When you have a spare second, please make your way over to this post to sign the petition against The Half Moon's closure and find out how else you can help.

Whalebone Polly [Dec 09 2009 / 10:26pm]

WHALEBONE POLLY

Tonight I've been busying myself with reviews for Wears the Trousers. In the past the publication has introduced me to some of my favourite female artists - including Kat Flint, Gemma Hayes and Slow Club - but it's always an equal pleasure to find them supporting an act that I already adore: Whalebone Polly are a folk duo who formed in Bristol back in 2004. Although one half of the project, Kate Stanley, lives in Paris and the other, Racheal Dadd, seems to be constantly touring the world, when they're in the UK they always make time to play the city that bore them, and they're a spectacular treat live.

They recently released their Taproot and Sill EP and opening track "The Turnip Turned" is beautiful. So beautiful, I can't keep it from you. I do however urge you to purchase a copy of the release - "The Turnip Turned" may be the best track, but the rest of the EP is on an elevated par. You can get a copy here.
